What is nasal valve collapse?
Nasal valve collapse is caused by weak lateral cartilage collapsing inward when a person inhales. Nasal valve collapse is as prevalent as septal deviation and turbinate hypertrophy among nasal and sinus patients.
Weakness in the lateral nasal wall can result from abnormal anatomy which can be congenital. In addition to weakness of the lower lateral cartilages of the nose, prior rhinoplasty surgery can also lead to lateral nasal wall instability. Over-resection of the lower lateral cartilages is a common cause of nasal valve collapse. There are several treatment options to repair lateral wall collapse including functional rhinoplasty and revision rhinoplasty to improve nasal breathing.
The Latest Treatment Option in Nasal Valve Stenosis Repair – LATERA®
Lateral is the newest option in nasal valve stenosis treatment. Lateral is an absorbable implant which is placed in the lateral nasal wall. LATERA may help you breathe better by reducing your nasal obstruction symptoms. It is inserted through a small incision in the nose. Patients reported improved breathing through their nose and little risk of cosmetic change in their nose. The majority of patients implanted with Lateral were satisfied with their breathing (86%) and the cosmetic appearance of their nose (93%).
