Barrera-Reconstructive-Surgery-San-Antonio

Double board-certified surgeon Dr. Jose Barrera offers a wide range of reconstructive surgeries at his San Antonio practice. A double fellowship-trained surgeon in sleep medicine and sleep surgery, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery, Dr. Barrera is specially trained in handling complex reconstructive cases and has years of experience working with both children and adult patients. He tailors his approach to the specific needs of the individual patient.

Maxillofacial Surgery

Maxillofacial or jaw surgery is performed to correct irregularities of the jawbones by realigning the jaw and teeth. Making these corrections can address malocclusion, crossbite or sleep apnea associated with airway problems, as well as improve the facial appearance.

Before
After

When planning and performing maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Barrera will consider various functional and cosmetic factors, including the patient’s facial aesthetics, functional airway and teeth alignment. Maxillofacial surgery may be performed to improve a weak chin or correct an asymmetric chin (via genioplasty surgery). A chin setback can also be performed for a protruding chin.

In addition, obstructive sleep apnea can be improved with maxillomandibular advancement (MMA). MMA is the most successful sleep surgery available and is a recognized CPAP alternative treatment.

Scar Revision

Dr. Barrera can improve the texture of the skin and reduce the appearance of scars, as well as reconstruct the skin after Mohs surgery for skin cancer using several state-of-the-art fractional and CO2 laser systems. Laser treatments can also be used to correct wrinkles, acne, large pores, burns and poor skin tone and texture. Nasal reconstruction for nasal defects and advancement flaps are often used to repair facial defects left from skin cancer removal.

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Barrera has extensive experience performing pediatric surgeries of the face, neck and airway. With otoplasty (ear surgery), Dr. Barrera can reshape or pin back prominent or misshapen ears. He can perform the procedure in children as young as age 5, which is typically the age when the ears have stopped developing.

Dr. Barrera can also perform rhinoplasty (nose surgery) on teenage patients who experience impaired breathing or other structural problems due to genetics or nasal trauma as a result of injuries related to sports, vehicle accidents or other causes. Dr. Barrera is careful to make modifications to the nose to enhance functional and cosmetic aspects of the nose without compromising one or the other.

Dr. Barrera can also treat cleft lip and palate deformities in children, which are among the most common birth defects in the U.S. He will work with a team of specialists, including a dentist, pediatrician and speech pathologist, to design the best treatment plan.

Misalignment of the jaw, as well as dental deformities, can be corrected with a combination of orthodontic and orthognathic jaw surgery. Dr. Barrera works closely with several orthodontists in San Antonio and South Texas to best achieve a beautiful smile for our patients.

Many teenage children suffer from acne. Dr. Barrera and our providers at Rejuve MD MedSpa can improve acute acne and chronic acne scarring with our Lumenis IPL Acne and Erbium non-ablative laser resurfacing. Severe acne scarring would benefit from CO2 laser resurfacing and facial fillers like Sculptra.

Sports injuries are common among children. Nasal fractures can be reduced and a deviated septum corrected to improve nasal breathing. Orbital, facial and lower jaw fractures can also be treated to improve traumatic deformities.

Facial Reconstruction Surgery

Facial reconstruction surgery may be recommended when a patient has lost skin, bone continuity has been disrupted or scarring has interrupted the normal skin texture, color or elasticity due to genetics, trauma or injury. Dr. Barrera is trained and experienced in performing various facial reconstruction surgeries, including nasal reconstruction, cleft lip repair, eyelid reconstruction, facial scar and fracture reconstruction, scalp reconstruction and ear and neck reconstruction.

Otoplasty

Otoplasty can be performed on both children and adults who are by bothered by the appearance of prominent, large or misshapen ears. To reshape the ears, Dr. Barrera may re-sculpt cartilage. To pin back ears, he will use a suture technique to reposition them to a less prominent position. For overly large ears, Dr. Barrera may need to remove cartilage.
