Dysport®, Jeuveau®, Xeomin® and Botox® in San Antonio, TX
Dynamic wrinkles, also called expression lines, are a common type of wrinkle caused by facial expressions.
With time, wrinkles begin to appear in areas that are flexed by your expressions. The solution to these dynamic wrinkles is to relax the muscles under the skin that form them. Botox®, the world’s most popular botulinum toxin treatment, has been successfully used to ease facial muscle contractions since it won FDA approval in 2002. Newer neuromodulators Dysport® and Jeuveau® were FDA approved in 2009 and 2019 respectively. Xeomin was introduced in 2011 and offers a natural preservative free alternative to the other Botox injections on the market.

Botox and Dysport: Understanding These Powerful Neuromodulators
Year after year, botulinum toxin type A treatments, an injectable category that includes Botox, top the charts as the most popular cosmetic treatment in the U.S. In 2018, cosmetic professionals performed more than 7.4 million of these treatments on men and women in the United States, a number that increases each year.
Botox and Dysport are two of the most popular botulinum toxin treatments and are both offered at RejuveMD. We also offer Xeomin and Jueveau, both of which are gaining in popularity.
Botulinum toxin treatments are popular for a reason. In addition to a stellar safety record and extensive testing, these treatments offer impeccable results, without surgery or downtime. They are one of the most effective options available for fighting wrinkles.
Botulinum toxin treatments help wrinkles fade away, but they don’t work on every wrinkle. These treatments are designed to target a specific type of wrinkle called a dynamic wrinkle, a type of wrinkling that is created by facial movement and expressions. Crow’s feet, bunny lines, forehead lines, and those pesky 11s between the brows are common examples of the dynamic wrinkle. Botox for forehead is one of our most common treatment zones, but Dr. Barrera also regularly injects Botox around the eyes. Patients presenting with clenching, TMJ symptoms and grinding of the teeth can also benefit from Botox injection into the Masseter muscle. The masseters are the large chewing muscles in the cheek. Other patients want a slimmer jawline. Masseter injections to the cheek area can improve these areas. Dr. Barrera has experience with slimming the round face, often called cacheton, by many patients from Mexico and South America.
How do botulinum toxin treatments work? Essentially, these injectables are neuromodulators. They disrupt communication between nerves and muscles, forcing the muscle to temporarily stop contracting. When a particular muscle ceases wrinkling the skin above it, relaxing it stops the repetitve creasing action and the wrinkles fade. If your wrinkle isn’t caused by muscle activity, Dr. Barrera will recommend a different treatment option, often a dermal filler.
Botox is a powerful cosmetic treatment, but this injectable treats more than cosmetic concerns. We also use it to treat:
- Facial nerve paralysis
- Bell’s palsy
- Synkinesis (abnormal facial twitching and muscle movement)
- Migraine headaches
