What is Botox used for?

Want BOTOX injections in San Antonio? Dr. Jose Barrera, MD is a certified injector of neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport. There are many neuromodulators to choose from. All Botox neuromodulators work similarly to relax muscles which have caused dynamic or wrinkle lines over time. Aging effects from muscle contraction include visible forehead lines, the elevens, crow’s feet, bunny lines, and a pebbly chin. Other conditions including managing facial nerve paralysis and Bell’s palsy, and migraine therapy can also be improved. Botox and Dysport may be used to manage synkinesis (abnormal twitching and involuntary muscle movement of the face) associated with facial nerve paralysis and Bell’s palsy.

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?

Botox A is a neuromodulator called onabotulinum toxin A. Dysport is a prescription injection called abobotulinum toxin A. Botox and Dysport are both indicated for temporary improvement in the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines) in adults less than 65 years of age.

How does Botox and Dysport work?

Wrinkles are caused by repeated contraction of facial muscles. Over time, the muscles above and between the eyebrows repeatedly contract and tighten, causing wrinkles. Dysport works by blocking the signal from the nerve to the muscles, ultimately resulting in a reduction of muscle activity and temporarily preventing contraction of the muscles that cause frown lines.

What is Jeuveau?

Jeuveau™  is the newest botulinum toxin available to treat moderate to severe frown lines. These lines are cause forehead or glabella wrinkles. It is a prabotulinumtoxin A injection which works similar to the other neuromodulators available to patients. Jeuveau is a new tox now available in San Antonio, Texas.

What is Xeomin?

XEOMIN®  is a prescription neuromodulator similar to the other botulinum toxins which also weakens muscle contraction and improves frown lines. Xeomin is incobotulinum toxin A.

This means you will need about three times as many units of Dysport to get the same results as you would with one unit of Botox. As a result, the cost of Dysport treatment will likely end up being similar to Botox. Botox cost in San Antonio varies between $12 to $15 per unit. Dysport Cost in San Antonio varies between $4 to $5 per unit.

Bell’s Palsy is a benign weakness of the facial nerve. It is usually self-limiting and is not life-threatening. Bell’s Palsy manifests itself by the sudden onset of partial or total paralysis of all the muscles on one side of the face. This usually occurs following a viral infection. Bell’s Palsy will improve in 4-6 months and almost always by 12 months.

Treatment

Patients are usually given instruction to use eye drops during the day, an ointment and a moisture chamber at night to protect the eye on the effected side. If a moisture chamber cannot be tolerated, tape the eye shut. Steroids and Acyclovir (Zovirax) may be used to lessen the symptoms in severe cases however; the symptoms will typically improve spontaneously with no treatment.

With those who have only partial recovery and are concerned by the effects, there are other options. A weight can be surgically placed to help the eye lid close. Surgeries to help pull the side of the face and mouth up are also possibilities.

Prognosis

The prognosis is typically good with 86% of patients having a complete recovery. Risk factors for incomplete recovery include:

  • Age over 55 years
  • Hypertension
  • Complete facial weakness
  • Pain other than ear pain
  • Changes in tearing
