Why It’s Important to See a Board-Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon

There are many factors to consider when choosing a facial plastic surgeon for your procedure, but none more important than board certification. It is imperative that you choose a facial plastic surgeon who is board certified because it means that the surgeon has met certain standards in education, training and experience needed to perform surgery safely and successfully.

Dr. Jose Barrera is a triple board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgery specialist in San Antonio. He is certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and in the subspecialty of sleep medicine by the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ABOto). He is also certified in Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ABFPRS). About ABOto and ABFPRS

The ABOto is one of two specialty boards recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties to govern plastic surgeons (the second being the American Board of Plastic Surgery). Surgeons certified by the ABOto are otolaryngologists who provide medical and/or surgical treatment for diseases, allergies, deformities, disorders and/or injuries of the ears, nose, throat, face, jaws and other areas of the head and neck. Surgeons can earn certification in four sub-specialties: plastic surgery within the head and neck, sleep medicine, neurotology and pediatric otolaryngology.

Surgeons certified by the ABOto have completed standards set forth by the board, including residency training, licensure, and oral and written exams specific to their fields of expertise.

Upon receiving certification from the ABOto, surgeons can earn certification from the ABFPRS, a sub-specialty board that certifies surgeons exclusively in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. Being certified by the ABFPRS means the surgeon has obtained previous certification from the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, or the American Board of Plastic Surgery. ABFPRS certified surgeons have also completed an accredited residency program that includes training in facial plastic surgery and a two-day examination based on their facial plastic and reconstructive surgery knowledge. Surgeons must also submit proof of at least two years of clinical experience, which must include the completion of at least 100 facial plastic surgeries.

Not only does board certification signify a certain standard of education, training and experience, it also means that the surgeon is knowledgeable on the latest and most advanced plastic surgery techniques. Boards like the ABOto require surgeons to continuously refresh their knowledge and skill on their specific area of practice. Working with a board certified facial plastic surgeon who is skilled in modern techniques maximizes your chances of safe and successful results.
